Frequently Asked Questions

Need help deciding on the right electrical upgrade or backup power solution? Our FAQ section covers the most common questions homeowners ask about energy efficiency, EV charging, and more.

  • What’s the best backup power option for homes in snowy or remote areas?

Whole house batteries are the best options in most cases, as they can be located indoors away from the snow. However, if you often experience long outages for days instead of hours, a whole house backup generator would be necessary.

  • How do I choose the right home generator for emergency power outages?

New Tahoe Electric will evaluate your entire situation and come up with the best options for your home.

  • Can I install a Level 2 EV charger at home in California?

Yes, in fact, new homes in California are required to have these chargers.

  • What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 electric vehicle chargers?

Level 1 operates on ordinary 120v power and takes much longer to charge your vehicle than Level 2. Level 2 chargers are much more efficient, but they require dedicated 240v power, at least 50 amps or more.

  • Are solar battery upgrades a good investment for existing solar systems?

Yes, it’s very beneficial because solar requires a battery attached during utility power outages. A federal tax credit can be applied if you add batteries to an existing solar system.

  • What causes power outages in the Truckee and Lake Tahoe area?

In this area, we are subject to severe winter storms that can blow down power lines and create extended outages. In the summer fire season, utility companies often shut down power, especially when fires break out.

  • Do I need a permit to install a residential EV charger in California?

Permits are generally required for major electrical projects.

  • What are the benefits of installing LED lighting in your home?

LED lighting is at least 6x more energy efficient than old-fashioned incandescent lights. Also, if we are replacing fluorescent lighting, the time to next repair is much longer than fluorescent over time.

  • How can I make my home more energy efficient with electrical upgrades?

The most popular investment is solar power to help make your house energy independent.
